We moms know to-do lists well. Keep going, keep doing. Take care of everyone and every project – that’s the mom life. But recently, I’ve been granting myself permission to embrace a different mindset: Treat yourself; no guilt allowed. Trust me: Your mind, body and especially your family will thank you for it.

The quiet room at the Spa at Four Seasons Westlake Village.

For my recent “treat-yourself” solo date, I was seeking relaxation and pampering. For me to truly recharge, I need to be somewhere that feels “away” but is still close to home. The Four Seasons Westlake Village is an oasis of tranquility just off the 101 Freeway. The hotel is surrounded by the Santa Monica Mountains and has beautiful gardens, great restaurants and a staff committed to making sure you’re taken care of.

My day began with a veggie omelet and 33-layer croissant slathered in strawberry-and-thyme jam at the hotel’s recently opened Coin & Candor restaurant. The California brasserie features rustic, seasonal and locally sourced creations by executive chef José Fernandez. Warm, fresh bread is my glass of wine – the ultimate relaxation food. Starting my day with the delightful aroma of fresh croissants and house-milled Red Fife grain sourdough bread created by executive pastry chef Patrick Fahy (formerly at the French Laundry in Napa) was definitely the beginning of something wonderful.

Breakfast at Coin & Candor

After breakfast, I headed to the Spa at Four Seasons, where I slipped into a cozy plush robe. I tucked my phone – along with my to-do lists, emails, texts, responsibilities and world news – into my bag, zipped it closed and left it in the locker. My only companion was a book.

I poured a cup of chamomile citron herbal tea and headed to a lounge chair by the spa pool. My focus turned to the author’s words as I enjoyed the sun on my face. Before my treatment, I headed to the quiet room, where comfy sofa beds look onto a cascading waterfall filled with orchids. This is the kind of room you wish you could escape to every day.

Tea by the Spa pool

By the time I walked into the massage room with my therapist, Nancy, my mind had already stopped racing, and thanks to Nancy’s expert hands, I felt every knot in my back and neck untie. I asked Nancy to leave the door to the small patio outside open so that I could enjoy the fresh air and the subtle rustle of leaves.

Post massage, I enjoyed the steam room and a long, hot shower, then headed to the luxe salon, Rhythm & Hair, for a blowout, which began with a wonderful scalp massage and ended with soft waves that I enjoyed for several days. It turned out that hair stylist Ryan (at left in the photo with me) and I had a lot in common. We chatted about our favorite “Friends” and “Gilmore Girls” episodes, growing up in L.A., food and culture.

When I went back to the locker room to get dressed and grab my bag, I felt like I was leaving a week-long beach vacation. I had no makeup on, but my hair felt soft and wonderful, and I looked refreshed and relaxed. I thought about grabbing one of the signature drinks at the lively new bar inside Coin & Candor, but opted instead to take a walk around the property, soaking in the lush mountain views and gardens before heading home.

The happy, relaxed me was ready to dive back into my to-do list.

NAPPA Awards Q & A with Justin and Monique Honaman, creators of KIC-Start, 2019 NAPPA Award winner

Justin and Monique Honaman with their kids Kendall and Harrison

Justin and Monique Honaman are based in Atlanta, Georgia. They are parents of two kids, ages 18 and 20 and launched Contender Brands in 2016 “after talking about various ideas for about 7 years!” We are thrilled to get to know them better.

Tell us a little about how KIC-Start was born and where your inspiration came from?

We love “BIG” talk. We love when we have engaging dialogue with others, as opposed to that small-talk banter that doesn’t accomplish anything. That idea led us to the creation of our first get-to-know-you conversation-starter game called, “Cocktail Farty” where FART stands for “Friends Admitting Real Truths.” We received such a tremendous response to that first game that we launched three more conversation-starter sets (Whine Barrel, BrewaHa, and KegO’Cards). Each of these games while more adult-focused, are not obscene or crude in any way, however we realized we had an opportunity to share the joy of great conversation with younger people as well. We recognize that kids are spending more time on technology, and less time engaging in eye-to-eye dialogue, and that led us to create KIC-Start. KIC stands for Kids in Conversation, and the whole idea is to teach kids the art of conversational curiosity (ask a question, listen with empathy, thoughtfully prepare an answer, respond and share). Our inspiration comes from recognizing the truly wonderful relationships that are made when people take the time to really talk, listen and connect to one another.

Tell us a little about your daily life as working parents.

Like so many other working parents, our daily lives are spent aligning the priorities of the day, juggling the various balls, and ensuring that the glass ones don’t drop. Our “day” jobs are very corporate. Justin works in digital technology and transformation, and Monique works in executive development. Contender Brands is our side-hustle where we are able to exercise our creative energies. We love coming up with new ideas and taking them from concept to creation.

What do you enjoy doing when not working?

Both of our children are in the process of launching out of our nest, and that is exciting as we see what the new change in routine brings to us all. We are both active in our communities and both serve on various boards and volunteer with various non-profits primarily those that serve to build children of courage, confidence and character. In our “free” time, we love to take our 3 rescue dogs on walks, love spending time at the lake, and enjoy hiking, kayaking, and all sorts of other outdoor adventures.

Favorite place to be with your family?

Family time with all 4 of us becomes more scarce as everyone gets involved in their own activities. Time together becomes more sacred! We’re not ashamed to admit that we use awesome adventure vacations (that we fully fund!) as opportunities for all four of us to connect, have fun, and spend quality time together!

Best life advice?

Monique’s life mantra is “What’s the worst that can happen?” People are frequently too slow to make change or take a risk for fear of what might happen. Asking, “what’s the worst that can happen?” helps you put things into perspective.

Justin’s life mantra is “All-in!” His approach is to give 100% energy and enthusiasm to every endeavor to which he commits.

Best advice for parents on trying to balance it all?

Don’t try to balance it all! Balance gives the perception of a teeter-totter where both ends need to be equally weighted in order to be in balance. Think of what happens when the bigger kid gets off the teeter-totter and the smaller kid would come crashing down. Frankly, on any given day, one priority or another in your life will require more attention than another. Instead of balancing it all, we prefer to think of it as being focused and present on whatever priority needs your attention at that point in time (instead of being at the school or sporting event worrying about the next day’s business meeting).

“What school is your child going to?”

No other question (other than perhaps “Do you have a reliable babysitter?”) is uttered more frequently at playgroups and birthday parties. And none evokes more anxiety. Most parents are well aware of the pressures of school choices. This parental one-upsmanship starts in preschool and grows with the child.

Why does it matter so much? Is it because we want the world to know that our child is so beguiling that he can get into XYZ Preschool? Or that her SAT scores were so off the charts that all the Ivies are knocking down our doors? Or is it because these school choices really matter to our kids’ futures?

The recent college-admission scandal has brought these questions to the top of our collective parental minds.

“It hits people right in the stomach,” says Lara Fielding, Psy.D., author of “Mastering Adulthood: Go Beyond Adulting to Become an Emotional Grown-up.” “It just stinks of the entitlement that our American culture kind of hates.” And Fielding says the recent scandals involving bribery and cheating to get kids into colleges reflect one of the biggest mistakes we can make as parents: fixing short-term anxieties.

Fielding says there’s something that feels really good about lowering a child’s anxiety, so oftentimes, you keep repeating the behavior. But going to extremes and solving all of our kids’ problems robs them of vital skills that they need to develop by learning from their own discomfort. “I was, in a way, happy to see this scandal break, hoping maybe now this would be the final red flag. Can you see what you’re doing? Why your kids are ending up in my office so often?” says Fielding, who has a practice in Beverly Hills, California.

But how do we, as involved and concerned parents, avoid these traps and find balance? How do we manage our anxieties about whether our children are going to get into college, find rewarding careers and, ultimately, become happy, productive adults?

We have to decide what our guiding values are as parents and stop listening to the “mind chatter,” as Fielding calls it. “All that mind chatter is a reaction to social comparisons,” she says, “and not consistent to your values.” She recommends using mindfulness techniques when you’re starting to spiral in on whether you feel you’re doing enough for your child or are comparing yourself to another parent’s experiences: Pull yourself back into the present and remember that these thoughts are just thoughts, not facts.

Not all kids are at the top of their class. Or care about school. Or are dying to attend a top-tier college. Those issues often feed into a parent’s anxiety and can lead to the temptation to cheat or buy your way in.

But receiving a rejection letter from a dream school or not achieving a high SAT score can be its own lesson in resilience, and swooping in to rescue your child from disappointment can be a disservice. Remember, Fielding says, that “doing things to help your child feel good short-term is sort of like picking up the crack pipe.”

She stresses that your child’s academic life is only a piece of the big picture of who they are. “It always comes back to those values as a family,” she says. “All we can do is mind our side of that fence and do the best we can to live a vital and fulfilling life, which comes from being consistent to our own true north.”

So the next time you get asked that all-important question, answer it with confidence, knowing that it’s not about the school, but rather about the human being that you’re raising.

So excited to share our latest NAPPA-Award winning music CDs perfect for the whole family to enjoy together!
