“Am I a Unicorn” is a picture book about a unicorn that loses their most distinguishing feature, their horn. The unicorn goes through a series of emotions and ultimately comes to the realization that they are indeed a unicorn, even without the horn. The book is a great tool to open up a conversation about physical and emotional differences, while celebrating inclusion and diversity. The book also includes a classroom discussion page and a recipe for one of a kind tie-dye cupcakes.
Evaluation comments:
“This book teaches a lesson that everyone, birth to death, needs to learn, that what you feel inside is what matters- that is what makes you who you are.”
“The book is colorful, has a great lesson for elementary age students. If a child is coming to terms with who they are, this is a great book to read together to talk about that situation and how they are who they are and have many gifts.”
“Beautifully written and illustrated book for a teacher’s library- great lessons to be had about acceptance (there are classroom discussion questions at the end of the book to support these lessons).”
