A little bit pop, Americana, and a dash of African rhythm. Add in some cajun, country with Japanese flair, (and dirty socks), and you have BABY NINJA! And bonus – this album comes with a comic book! Originality, a bit of ridiculousness, joy, empowerment, and abundant love… this album bursts open with the album’s title track, infused with a “Southwestern, retro-martial-arts spy vibe” underscored by this takeaway: never underestimate the very real power of a baby!

“If the songs here project a colorful, oversized size of fun, it might be because this album comes with a comic book that is inspired by the songs’ lyrics. Or it might be because Kelli Welli has a knack for creating songs with a colorful, oversized size of fun. The title track, which opens the album, delightfully voices the comical adventures/misadventures of a baby who believes they’re a ninja. Welli also gets inside a dog’s mind on a pair of paw-somely amusing tunes, “Dogs Doin’ Dishes” and “Dirty Socks.” Animals are the focus of a couple other humorous numbers: highly entertaining, singalong-style “Ryan The Lion” and the zany little ditty, “Skunk In A Handstand.” Welli, however, isn’t just aiming for jokes here. “Superstar” and “My Little Hero” wonderfully express the love that parents have for their children, while “When You Dance” conveys how something as ordinary as dancing has the power to fill someone else’s soul. Special mention should be made for “I Put My Heart Into.” In a simple, gentle, but still very moving way, Welli uses examples of making something by hand to show how much, and how deeply, one person can feel for another. Whether she is going for something humorous or heartfelt, Welli has put her heart into these songs and created an album, to quote one of her lyrics, “filled with love and light.””
