Beanstalk Jack is a musical retelling of the classic tale, “Jack and the Beanstalk.” It is a narrative musical journey that begins in the style of American Folk music and goes on to pay tribute to ’60s, ’70s, and ’80s-style pop and rock. The story has been updated for modern families and celebrates a spirit of optimism, with a girl-meets-boy twist and more than a hint of youthful rebellion.
Here’s what our NAPPA judge says:
“The New York-based Paper Canoe Company deserves big praise for their musical re-imagining of this familiar tale. PCC’s co-founders Tami Stronach and Greg Steinbruner serve up a super song-cycle covering an impressive array of musical styles. Particularly memorable tunes include the gentle folk song “Bestest Bargain” (think Milk Carton Kids or Simon & Garfunkel), the fizzy rocker “Lonely Boy,” the Tom Waits-esque “Fe Fi Fo Fum,” and the New Wave-y dance track “Hey Wow.” Not only is Beanstalk Jack a fun listen but it makes you want to see a stage version.”
