Evaluation comments from our NAPPA Awards Music Judge:
“There are at least three ways to enjoy Dinosaur Songs, Season Two. There is Dinostory’s story, about a baby Triceratops named Terri who explores the danger-filled dinosaur world with her friends. You can watch the accompanying videos for this set of eight songs. And there are the songs themselves. The opening track, “Smoke Fire Lava Volcano,” evocatively sets up the story of Teri’s prehistoric adventures, establishing various character voices and incorporating them with musical styles ranging from country to heavy metal. “Quicksand,” similarly, contains different musical motifs (including Yes-like interludes) to pair with the dino characters. A lively variety of music travels through Dinostory. The speed metal number “Velociraptor” and “Giganotosaurus” (which humorously rhymes “get to the chorus” with the title dinosaur’s name) are strong head-banging numbers. “Pachycephalosaurus,” which mentions head-banging, blends prog and new wave music elements, while jazz and musical theater touches color “Troodon.” Closing the album is the gentle “3 Eggs, which focuses on Teri’s life and sets up future adventures. On Dinostory, the Howdytoons team do a terrific job telling its “dinostory” in these entertaining, informative, and impressively performed songs, which isn’t surprising since these folks are largely the same ones behind the award-winning Dinostory: The Ultimate Dinosaur Rock Opera.”
