The free Earth Rangers App makes it easy and fun for kids to learn about wildlife and conservation, taking them off-screen and empowering them to take action in their local communities. Users can sign up – complete with a membership card and welcome package in the mail! – and create/customize their avatars before participating in dozens of “missions” that help make a real impact— from planting pollinator gardens to reducing energy consumption and food waste.
Evaluation comments:
“This app encourages children to be aware of conservation efforts and to learn about the world-animals, habitats, ecology, water conservation etc. Children are given missions such as cleaning up the beach, recycling and conserving water. There are videos that are short and easy to watch. The app does encourage raising money to help some animals- but it is not necessary to do that, and children can still access lesson plans, videos, article, and games. If you want to “adopt an animal” there is a charge for that.”
“There are fun missions, the app is colorful, and it was fun to make my avatar. I like that the missions get the children to look outside (for example to “become a backyard biologist”). I like that children learn about conservation and recycling. In one mission, they learn about cutting single use plastic out. The family can sign a pledge to do this.”
“Each mission educates, provides ideas, and asks for a picture of the child doing the mission. Once done they get points that can be used to get things for their avatar.”
“Fun and educational.”
“I would recommend it for families to learn and act on these missions together. This would also be great for an elementary school teacher for science activities.”
