Evaluation comments from our NAPPA Awards Music Judge:
“Gershwin’s Magic Key is not your typical kids album. Instead of being a collection of songs, this CD presents a performance of Gershwin’s Magic Key, which Classic Kids Live describes as an “educationally entertaining musical.” And they are right on both counts in this work that does a masterful job at telling Gershwin’s story in a way that is entertaining and informative to listeners of all ages. Set in New York City of the Twenties, this 50-minute performance tells the story of a young newspaper boy who meets the great composer George Gershwin. It follows their growing friendship while mixing in historical facts about the Twenties, New York City, and Gershwin. The score draws from Gershwin’s amazing music, and it climaxes with a dramatic performance of Gershwin “premiering” his classic “Rhapsody in Blue.” And just what is “Gershwin’s Magic Key”? I’m not going to give that away! You’ll have to listen to this joyful musical yourself to find out!”
