Award-winning children’s book publisher Cuento de Luz, announces plans for its newest title, The Color of Your Skin, in both English and Spanish. The Color of Your Skin is a creative tale that addresses and celebrates diversity among young children.
The Story
Vega and her colored pencils were inseparable, and together they created the most impressive drawings that were later displayed in the best museum in the world: her refrigerator at home. Vega used every color of the imagination for her drawings, from red and yellow to blue and gold. One day at school, Vega was immersed in one of her new creations when her friend Alex stopped by and peered into the box of pencils Vega had on her table. When he asked for Vega to lend him the skin-colored pencil, Vega and Alex started a conversation, wondering why there is such a color in the box. With curiosity and creativity, they explore the diversity of skin tones of people who are part of their daily lives, and they discover that the “skin-color” can have a thousand shades and not just one.
Evaluation comments:
“Beautifully written and illustrated book that explores diversity of people through their skin tones. I like that when the boy that originally asked for “skin-color” pencil asks the little girl why the pencil is called that, she says maybe the person who discovered it had that skin color and forgot to add the rest, that everyone makes mistakes.”
“Wonderful lesson that we are all different and come in many shades or skin tones.”
“This book addresses the topic of skin color and does it in a way that will make sense to children and is inclusive.”
“I think parents, librarians and teachers are always looking for books that showcase diversity and the diversity of skin color is one I think people will embrace.”
“The illustrations are lovely, very welcoming and have a certain charm. Well done.”
