Amira is a Sudanese girl living peacefully in her village when her homeland is attacked by a militant group. Amira ultimately finds hope in the form of a single red pencil and encouragement of a wise elder. Through her words and drawing she reclaims another dream she thought she’d lost – education. With lyrical prose, this is a triumphant story of hope against all odds and the power of the human spirit to prevail.
Why we like it: Poetically narrated in such a way that captures the attention of adults and children. The Red Pencil tackles difficult subject matters in a way that will open a child’s eyes and heart.
