Body awareness is a key foundation of consent. We Listen to Our Bodies gives children a vocabulary to understand and communicate their feelings, develop personal boundaries, and build their social and emotional skills. This book follows Deja and her preschool classmates as they learn to build emotional self-awareness by listening to the physical cues of their bodies. Book includes a song from Peaceful Schools.
Evaluation comments:
“Great for social-emotional learning.”
“I love that it helps children develop physical and emotional self-awareness.”
“I like the diversity and the theme of this book. The book is about a little girl going to preschool and feeling big feelings throughout the day. Her teacher, who is in a wheelchair and male, helps her and her friends realize their bodies talk to them.”
“I absolutely love the diversity in this book- a male teacher in a wheelchair, a character with a hijab, children of various ethnic backgrounds.”
“The message is awesome and exactly what we work on at our preschool.”
“There are tips at the end of the book for caregivers-such as the five steps for teaching consent: I listen to my body, I am in charge of my body, I ask permission, I check in, I accept no. There is an emotions body map that can be used for lessons (anger is red, surprise is orange, joy is yellow etc.). There are also websites to help families navigate the world of consent. The story focuses on understanding our bodies and messages they are sending. The guide for adults at the end states how important it is for children to have this awareness.”
“There is also a song!!! “We listen to our bodies”- it is wonderful. The lyrics and music are at the end of the book and the song is online.”
“It is a wonderful book. The diversity is amazing.”
